Wild camping in Sardinia: rules and places to stay

Sardinia is a wonderful European destination for a road trip by 4x4, campervan or motorhome. Wild mountains, tracks, beaches and characterful villages offer plenty to explore at your own pace.

But one question comes up time and again when planning a trip:

Can you wild camp in Sardinia?

There are a few important distinctions to understand.

Wild camping in Sardinia: the rules

You cannot simply set up camp wherever you choose. Sardinian regional law prohibits camping with tents, caravans, campervans or similar equipment outside authorised accommodation facilities and designated areas.

Extra rules may apply along the coast, on beaches and dunes, and in nature reserves, forests or archaeological sites. Private land also requires the owner’s permission, which does not override the applicable regulations.

Being able to drive along a track in a 4x4 does not mean you may spend the night there. Permission to park does not automatically include permission to camp.

Before settling in, check the current local rules and choose a place explicitly authorised for the way you intend to stay: parking overnight, using a rooftop tent or setting up camp.

Plan more than one place to stay

A useful habit is to have several overnight options in mind for each stage.

Depending on the season and your progress, these might include:

* a campsite;

* an agriturismo, or farm stay;

* an authorised overnight parking area suitable for your vehicle;

* a guesthouse;

* a small hotel.

This flexibility is particularly useful in high season, when popular places can book up quickly.

Travel considerately and respect each place

How travellers behave shapes the way the wider community is welcomed.

A few simple habits help protect the places we enjoy exploring:

* take all your rubbish with you;

* never block an entrance or track;

* keep noise down, especially in the evening;

* respect residents and other travellers;

* keep your equipment within the space and conditions allowed at your stop.

Thoughtful behaviour helps everyone enjoy their stay. Being discreet is never a substitute for permission.

Put nature first

Sardinia has an exceptional natural heritage.

Its dunes, wetlands, cliffs, Mediterranean scrub and forests support remarkable biodiversity that we all have a part in protecting.

Stay on routes where vehicle access is permitted, do not drive off the tracks and leave every place as you found it.

Responsible travel helps preserve these special landscapes for the future.

A GreenTracers roadbook: a companion for your trip

At GreenTracers, we design our roadbooks to help with the whole trip, as well as the navigation.

Each route is checked on the ground and comes with practical information to help you prepare. Access conditions can change, so always check local signs and restrictions during your trip.

Depending on the roadbook, you will find:

* a route checked on the ground;

* GPX tracks to load into a compatible navigation device or app;

* a digital roadbook: PDF + GPX in English;

* sightseeing information;

* practical advice to help organise your trip.

The aim is simple: to help you enjoy your road trip without spending hours planning every stage from scratch.
